PALMA DE MALLORCA, 20 January 2025 – After a nearly seven-year hiatus, the Philippine Consulate in Palma de Mallorca has reopened, with Atty. Josep Maria Amengual Alemany appointed as its Honorary Consul.

The reopening aims to strengthen the Philippine government’s diplomatic presence in the Balearic Islands, ensuring the promotion and protection of Filipino interests in the region.

With Consul Alemany at the helm, Filipino citizens in the Balearic Islands will have improved access to services such as the notarization of documents, reports of birth, marriage, and death, and legal document processing, including applications for National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance.

Passport applications and renewals will still require travel to the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona or waiting consular outreach missions to the Balearic Islands.

"There are approximately 5,500-6,000 Filipinos living in Mallorca and Menorca, and around 2,050 more in Ibiza and Formentera. Our kababayan in these areas no longer need to fly to Barcelona to process most consular services,” said Philippine Consul General to Barcelona Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro.

The Balearic Islands fall under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, and the reopening of the consulate in Palma de Mallorca is expected to ease the burden on Filipino residents across the region.

Consul Alemany, a tax lawyer with 25 years of experience, is well-versed in assisting foreign migrants as well as investors. His work has connected him with the Filipino community in the Balearic Islands, inspiring him to take on their specific concerns.

“I believe I can assist to the welfare of the Filipino community in Spain by ensuring seamless access to essential consular services, safeguarding their rights, and promoting a strong sense of unity and mutual support within the community” said Consul Alemany, expressing his commitment to supporting the welfare of the Filipino community in Balearic Islands.
