Barcelona, Spain – In a strategic effort to advance the Philippines' aquaculture industry, the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, led by Consul General Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro, accompanied by Consul and Economic Officer Raisa Mabayo organized a visit for officials from the Department of Agriculture, led by Undersecretary Drusila Esther Bayate, with Agriculture Attache Kristine Yap at the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries (IRTA) in La Ràpita on April 22, 2024. The visit underscored the Philippines’ dedication to exploring international best practices and innovative technologies in aquaculture to enhance its sustainable practices and food security.

This important visit occurred in the lead up to the Seafood Expo Global, which took place on 23-26 April 2024, leveraging their presence to gain deeper insights into Catalonia's pioneering aquaculture research. IRTA La Ràpita, known for its cutting-edge research in sustainable fish farming techniques, offered the delegation a unique opportunity to explore potential collaborations and adapt these advancements to benefit the Philippine aquaculture sector.

During their time at the facility, the delegation engaged with top researchers to discuss the latest advancements in aquaculture technology and sustainable practices. This interaction is expected to pave the way for future collaborations between the Philippines and Spain, enhancing the capabilities of the Philippines’ aquaculture industry through international knowledge exchange.
