BARCELONA CITY, 06 April 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona, with the aim to upscale skills and reskill overseas Filipinos, hosted yet again another sushi-making workshop, this time in collaboration with German company Eat Happy, held at the Consulate General’s Hall on 06 April 2024.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Clifford Ubaldo, head chef and co-owner of Barcelona-based restaurant called Disoriente, and sushi chefs from Eat Happy, a company dedicated to providing carefully crafted fresh sushi and a variety of other Asian snacks via a shop-in-shop concept across Europe.

A total of 100 Barcelona-based Filipinos took part in the event, which was held in two sessions. Majority of the participants cited interest in seeking alternative means of earning income and in learning new culinary skills as reasons for joining the workshop. Potential employment was also one of the most cited reasons.

“Nagpapasalamat kami sa Consulado at sa Eat Happy sa workshop na binigay nila sa mga kababayan natin sa Barcelona. Nagkaroon kami ng bagong skill na magagamit namin at maka-explore ng ibang oportunidad,” said Modesta Fidelan,66, who has been living in Barcelona for 17 years.

During the workshop, Chef Ubaldo not only served as a mentor; he also inspired the participants with his story as an OFW in Spain.  His restaurant Disoriente which was establish with his foreign partners in 2022, is a vegan sushi restaurant serving cuisine of Asian-Spanish fusion. It currently stands as the highest-ranked restaurant among over 9,000 restaurants in Barcelona reviewed on the Trip Advisor.

The sushi/making seminar is part of the empowerment program of the Consulate which aims to upskill and retool Filipinos through various training initiatives for them to access new opportunities. This is the second seminar/workshop the Consulate has conducted this year. The first was a barista training conducted in partnership with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
