BARCELONA, 12 December 2023 – Former Chief Justice Antonio Carpio embarked on a lecture tour across cities of Barcelona and Valencia, Spain from 28 November to 01 December 2023, discussing the Philippines’ 2016 Arbitral Award win that affirmed the country’s claim over the West Philippines Sea.
Renowned for his pivotal role in the Philippines' legal battle in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague from 2013 to 2016, Justice Carpio held a series of engagements, including lectures before students and faculty of the Centro De Estudios Internationales (CEI)-International Affairs in the University of Barcelona on 28 November 2023, in Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Valencia on 30 November 2023, and in Blanquerna-Universidad Ramon Llull on 01 December 2023.

Justice Carpio’s lectures shed light on the legal intricacies and geopolitical implications of the Philippines' landmark case against China.
Justice Carpio also met and connected with the members of the Filipino community both in Barcelona and Valencia. The forum “Ikaw at ang Kwento ng West Philippine Sea” held at the Philippine Consulate General Hall on 28 November 2023 allowed for discussions with the Filipinos on pressing issues concerning the West Philippine Sea and broader topics of national interest.
The members of the Filipino Community in Valencia on one hand joined law and international relations students, as well as law practitioners in Justice Carpio’s lecture held at Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Valencia on 30 November 2023. Universitat Jaume I’s Professor and Europe’s underwater archaeology expert Mariano Aznar complemented Justice Carpio’s lecture.
“The tour not only served as an educational platform but also facilitated dialogue and engagement on crucial matters pertaining to international law and territorial disputes which our future international relations and security practitioners in Spain obtained.
