Over 20 students attended the event, featuring Dr. Daisy Lopez, Professor Isaac Donoso, and Professor Pedro Aullón de Haro

Alicante, Spain — As part of the ongoing Philippine and Southeast Asian Studies course at the University of Alicante, a seminar titled “Current Academic Insights on Spanish in the Philippines, Philippine Literature in Spanish, and the Chabacano Creole” was held on 15 May 2025 at the Ceremonial Room of the Faculty of Arts and Letters.

The seminar, conducted under the University’s Philippine Studies Program—a 6-credit course running from 13 February to 12 June—gathered students, faculty members, and members of the wider academic community. It featured Dr. Daisy López, Director of the Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, as main speaker. Dr. López offered reflections on the historical trajectory and contemporary relevance of Spanish in the Philippines, including the evolution of the Chabacano Creole. She also shared selected poems from her volume Hermosa Palabra (Barcelona, 2022), written in the now-extinct variety of Chabacano once spoken in Ermita, Manila.

The session was introduced by Professor Pedro Aullón de Haro, who emphasized the circularity of culture and the enduring significance of Hispanic civilization in the Philippine context.

The event drew around twenty in-person attendees from the Humanities and Hispanic Philology departments, with additional participation via livestream by students enrolled in the Philippine and Southeast Asian Studies course.

Ms. López is currently in Madrid on a three-month lexicographic residency with the Real Academia Española under the auspices of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española (ASALE).
