Barcelona, 23 April 2025 - As part of its celebration of National Literature Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona joined the Filipino community in commemorating Dia de Sant Jordi al Raval (Day of Saint George in Raval) on April 23. A representative from the Consulate attended the festivities, which highlighted the literary and cultural expressions of Raval’s diverse communities.
Celebrated annually across Catalonia, Dia de Sant Jordi is a beloved tradition that honors love and literature through the symbolic exchange of books and roses. In Raval, the event took on a multicultural dimension, providing a platform for residents from various backgrounds to share stories and creative works.
The Filipino community’s participation in the Literary Program was a highlight of the event. Two longtime Filipino residents of Barcelona were featured in poetry readings that underscored the depth of Philippine literary tradition. Ms. Consuelo Montero, co-founder of Migrantes Retornados en Filipinas, shared her original poem Baliktanaw sa Aking Paglalakbay, a personal reflection on migration, identity, and resilience. She was followed by Ms. Elvira Camules Apilado, who presented Ang Pamana by renowned Filipino poet Jose Corazon de Jesus—a tribute to heritage and cultural pride.
Their performances were warmly received and affirmed the Filipino community’s active role in the intercultural fabric of Raval.
The Consulate General’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to cultural diplomacy and community engagement. By supporting inclusive events such as Dia de Sant Jordi al Raval, the Consulate seeks to strengthen solidarity and foster shared appreciation for literature among Filipino, Spanish, and international communities.
