Filipino Community Holds Barcelona Sinulog-Santo Niño Festival 2022

17 January 2022 – The Philippine Consulate General in Barcelona represented by Consul General Maria Theresa S.M. Lazaro, as part of its cultural diplomacy program, joined the Filipino community in Barcelona in their celebration of the Sinulog-Santo Niño Festival.  The activity was held at the Plaza San Agustin and the San Agustin Church in the afternoon of 16 January 2022.

Due to the restrictions posed by CoViD-19 health protocols, the outdoor Sinulog-dance celebration held at the Plaza San Agustin in the La Raval district was kept short and simple with the number of performers kept to a minimum.  In spite of the constraints, the spirits of both the performers and the audience members, composed of Filipinos and Spaniards, were high. Officials from the Barcelona City Government also graced the celebration. Messages were given by representatives from the Visayas Mindanao group, the parish organization and Consul General Lazaro.

In her message, Consul General Lazaro encouraged everyone not to lose hope during this time of difficulty and to look upon the Santo Niño as a source of strength and refuge. An invitation was also extended for the upcoming Santo Niño exhibit organized by the Consulate, tentatively scheduled from 05 March to 31 May 2022.  She also expressed her appreciation for the support of the Filipino community in the series of Santo Nino programs of the Barcelona PCG, which began with the presentation of the Santo Niño de Cebu at the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia on 05 December 2021.

The Barcelona Sinulog 2022 celebration continued with a Sunday mass held at the San Agustin Church.  To the delight of the Filipino community the replica of the Santo Niño de Cebu, which is currently hosted by the San Agustin Church, was brought out of its glass enclosure for all the devotees to venerate.  Flowers were offered to the Santo Niño, not only by devotees but by everyone present.

The Barcelona Sinulog 2022 program ended with everyone cheering exuberantly “Viva Pit Señor !”.END
